The Worth of a Soul

During my time in South Africa I was taken to meet a little girl named Mercuyru. She is 10 years old and has been disabled her entire life, both physically and mentally. Her grandfather looks after her now, I believe her parents passed away, it sounded like it was from aids. I had a special connection with her. I looked at her and she smiled, she was sitting in the dirt, unable to walk, she has had to crawl everywhere she goes. Many people around the world believe that if you have a child that is born disabled it is a curse from God, and that they should abandon the child.
I realized as I sat there and played with her that she is truly a special daughter of God. I just thought of all of her trials, born unable to walk, or talk and interact the way the most of the world does, she had never had a wheelchair or really anything of material means to cling to, yet she smiled and beamed, God’s light radiated from her. She had no parents and probably didn’t have anyone who really cared for her most of the time, however she managed to smile and just show love. I know I will see her again someday, and she’ll be walking and her salvation will be given to her. For now, I left her and told her that the next time I’d see her, she would be in a wheelchair up off the ground and lifted up to a new level. She changed my life; I have seen the need, and am inspired and humbled to be able to work with the disabled community. They truly are valiant souls who have great worth and make this world a better place.

Whitney, I love you! You are so awesome. I'm glad you had a chance to go and do that trip, those people will be so blessed to have those wheelchairs and you will be blessed with compassion for being able to walk in someone elses shoes. I admire you!
