Day 5 - Buddhism and Stinky Tofu

October 17

Today I got my first taste of home sickness and stinky tofu. I am really missing my husband and my bed. Don’s gone, we dropped him off for his trip down to Viet Nam, and for the next 36 hours I am pretty much on my own in Shanghai in a dumpy little motel where no one speaks English. I have an appointment tomorrow at 10 am with Andrew at the China Christian Council, who I have worked with for years, so it will be nice to meet him, but other than that I don’t have anything going on.
I thought we would have a little more fun in Shaghai, but thanks to the World Expo there are millions of tourists here. And I mean millions. The expo had 1 million people go through it yesterday. I wish I could have been one of them. I didn’t even know it was going and, and didn’t really arrange my schedule to be able to go, kind of a bummer. We attempted to check out a few main attractions in Shanghai, but due to long lines and our limited time since we had to get Don to the airport, we couldn’t go up the highest building or inside any museums. I spotted a temple on a tourist map that looked a little outside the main areas of Shanghai and told Echo to take us there. It was actually a really cool experience. The Longhua Buddhist temple is the oldest temple in Shanghai. It was interesting to experience the practices of the Buddhist people. I really know nothing about Buddhism, but will surely be looking it up tonight.

After our tour of the temple, adventures in Chinese food continued. Echo ordered for us and most of it was excellent, dumpling soup, pork buns, vegetables, but the kicker had to be the stinky tofu. It seriously smelled like dog poo. A big basket of dog poo just sitting on the table, and I ate it. I ate one piece and the flavor actually wasn’t bad, but when you got a whiff of it while you ate it was just so disgusting. How do people eat these things. Sooo disgusting. But I tried it. You only live once.
