My Funny Valentine

I should start by explaining that for the past month Adam has been spending Sunday – Thursday in Philadelphia for work. (This will continue through March) Luckily we don’t have separation anxiety and while I miss him, especially on Sunday’s, it’s not as hard for us as it might be for other couples. Let’s face it, we really had about 3 waking hours with each other during the week anyway, and those were only on nights where we didn’t have church meetings, soft ball or book club to go to. I leave for work before he’s even awake and don’t generally get home until around 6:30pm, tired and pretty useless. So really our quality time is on weekends anyway. I digress, so, Philadelphia, yes, that’s where I was. While in Philadelphia, Adam gets a per diem for food. He’s been to some pretty great restaurants and spends most of his allowed money per day, as it is a use or lose it, daily, situation. So there's no roll over or pocketing the rest.  So, on the few days that he did have left over money to spend, you know what he did, he went to two of the top chocolate shops in Philadelphia and bought me chocolates for Valentine’s Day.
Now this would have been an awesome surprise if I hadn’t spoiled it 9 days before I was supposed to get it. You see, since we’ve been married (three years now) I’ve been doing Adam’s laundry. Every Saturday, I wash, fold and put his clothes away, along with my own. So on Saturday, February 5th, I was putting the laundry away, and I opened his sock drawer, and what do I notice just hanging out right on top, two boxes, that look like they should have chocolate inside. I felt bad I had spoiled the surprise, so I closed the drawer and left the pile of clean socks on the bed next to a couple t-shirts. Maybe he wouldn’t notice I had opened the drawer if I made it look like I hadn’t put his clothes away yet, and maybe he would see the pile of socks on the bed and think to put them away so I wouldn’t know about the chocolates. But no, Adam walks out and says, “did you open my sock drawer?” He knew. I didn’t even say anything and he just knew that I had seen them. Of course I said, “well did you think about the fact that I open that drawer every Saturday to put your clothes away, before you put them there?” He had, but then just told me he didn’t know where else to hide them. Although I can think of a million places, ok, maybe not a million since our place is only 935 sq.feet, but still there are places I wouldn’t have gone into. Alas, the surprise was ruined, but I still had to wait for my chocolates.
We exchanged gifts on Sunday, the 13th, since he would be in Philadelphia for the actual Valentine's Day. Let me tell you, the chocolates were worth waiting for. They are beautiful and he even hand picked them from one store. One box was from Naked Chocolates and the other from Max Brenner. So I got beautiful, expensive (but free, thanks to Boeing), chocolates for Valentine’s day.

I am so thankful for my funny valentine. I am thankful we know each other so well. Can’t believe it’s been almost 9 years since we met! I am thankful to have someone I trust so completely and someone who balances me out so well. We may not be the over-the-top romantic type, but Adam knows just what I need and never disappoints.   I sure love my Valentine!

Ahh, that's so cute! Sidenote: I'm impressed that you do all of the laundry and put it away every Saturday! I do all of our laundry once or twice a week, but it's the putting away that takes me forever! (Or, I just let it hang out in the dryer until the next load is ready)!

Max Brenner, not to be confused with Max Brunner.
