Self Discovery

I like going on vacations, this I already knew. I’ve never met anyone who does not. However, planning vacations, I have discovered, is just not my thing. Part of the reason I posted a blog about the cruise Adam and I are taking in October, was to get some tips on what to do. It was no surprise to me that my sister, Julie, came back with a comment on what to do. Planning vacations is her thing. Me on the other hand, I really, really don’t get any enjoyment out of it. It’s very stressful to me, and I am easily overwhelmed with all the options and research. I do a lot of research at work on best practices in the non-profit world, I have to research out hundreds of organizations, do intense background checks. I don’t mind doing this type of research, number one, because I am getting paid to do it and number two because in the end it means that lives will be transformed with the gift of a wheelchair in the most efficient way possible.

Coming home after a day at work and the gym, getting on the computer and doing more research just not my thing.

There is one problem with this. I want to make the most of my vacations. You see, growing up we were blessed to have parents who valued a good vacation and a Mother who would plan everything out so we could have the best experience possible. We would wake up each morning and she’d have a fabulous day planned for us. I like having a plan, I just don’t like making that plan, at least when it comes to vacations.

That being said I have managed to book excursions on three of the seven different port stops we’ll be making, but I have turned the task over to Adam, as I am beginning to hate doing it more and more each day, to the point where I am not even looking forward to it because I am afraid I am making a mistake by booking anything. So I need to take a step back from all this research and just look forward to what awaits, planned or unplanned. But if any of your have suggestions of what to do/ beaches to find/ what not to do/ in any of the follow destinations, I'm still accepting all the help I can get.

Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Barbados & St. Lucia.

Needless to say, if we have one of these one day, it will be managed by Adam and not me...

Whitney- sorry for all the stress! No fun! When Leah and I travelled around Europe our best friend was the Lonely Planet Guide. Our planning was a little different than yours- we planned a day, or at most, maybe a few days, in advance, but still this series was REALLY helpful. Look up Lonely Planet Carribean Islands on Amazon... Good luck!

Yeah, planning can be stressful! I like to just find a lot of things that are possibilities, and then discuss with Dustin what we'd rather do, and narrow down the list. Then, I like to just go, and "wing it." However, I know that all trips can't be just "winged." So, if there's a show I want to go see, or something I need a reservation for, then I can plan those and have all the other little things to fill in the time when we feel like doing it....

Good luck! It will be a wonderful vacation!!
